WeMo Mini Smart Plug the Best Option for Beginners
After I purchased Google Home Mini I was excited to start making the most out of my home-automation capabilities.
After spending an hour or so trying to connect our television, I realized there was a problem.
I assumed all my dumb devices will be plug and play. Well, I was wrong.
I went online and did some research, what I found was my Television was not equipped with HDMI-CEC, (check your TV manual for more information).
For you to use any smart device with voice control you need HDMI-CEC also called Consumer Electronics Control. This feature allows users to command and control devices connected through HDMI.
Once I figured out my television would not work with my Google Home Mini, I started researching other options.
Next, I went on Amazon and Google to see what was the reviews on this product.
Well, good news, theWeMo mini smart plug, with Wi-Fi enabled, was rated as the best smart plug you can buy today.
The WeMo Mini Smart Plug was highly recommended for its affordability and compatibly with Google Assistant, Alexa, and yes, Apple HomeKit.
Also, WeMo Mini is pretty easy to use, all you have to do is connect the smart plug into an existing outlet and install the app to get started.
Will WeMo Mini work with Google Home and Amazon Echo?
Yes, it works with Alexa, Google Home, and Apple Homekit, allowing users to control their devices with voice commands.
This is one of the reasons why I purchased the WeMo Mini smart plug. It works with whichever voice assistant you’re using, whether it’s a smartphone, a tablet, or other devices.
WeMo Mini Smart Plug Supports IFTTT
Yes, the WeMo Mini supports IFTTT (“If this then that”). I actually have a whole article on how to use IFTTT as well.
Installation is a Breeze
The first thing you need to do is get an iOS or Android app. Then you plug in your devices to an outlet, switch it on, and connect to your home Wi-Fi network.
Next, you give your network a name (Our WeMo name is TV and Livingroom lamp) and password.
Once you have it up and running, go into the app to set schedules or use IFTTT to set-up more configurations triggered by outside events.
Example: Toggle the Turn on/off your lights with one tap on my phone or If it begins to rain then change the light colors to blue.
After setting up our WeMo Mini smart plug, I was so addicted to turning on and off my television with voice commands, the next day I purchase another one.
We connected the second Wemo plug to our living room lamp.
Also, the WeMo Mini does not take up much space because of its design.
Allowing you to plug in more than one device into your outlet, stacking one on top of another which I think was a smart idea.
Why a Smart Plug?
The point of a smart plug is to make your dumb device, smart. Most of our devices in our home are simply, dumb. You need smart plugs to make them smart.
If you lease an apartment and only are limited to what you can automate, you can purchase a couple of smart plugs to help control your dumb devices.
When you move out, simply just remove the smart plugs from the outlets.
Or If you don’t want to get too technical, and just want to keep the set-up simple, just use smart plugs.
Smart products are becoming cheaper and easier to use, allowing more people to make the change from dumb to smart devices and, in many instances, their lives.
Conclusion
After spending some weeks with the WeMo Mini smart plug, I found it to be a great addition to our home. It has allowed me to convert my television, lamp, and other small appliances into smart devices.
With a push of a button from my smartphone or a command from my voice, WeMo Mini helps me complete the task.
It’s affordable, easy to set up, and simple to use.
